Aircraft piston engines which powered the Beech Barons I used to fly had fixed 
timing
set at 28 degrees BTDC & used a "vibrator" (retarded spark) for starting.

If you ever drag out that number where they settled on a timing figure for the 
Climax motor, I'd love to know what it was.
