I thought crank trigger systems used little black boxes with electronics
that would give you a curve if you wanted one.
But, most advance/retard would be for going from low to high rpms so I guess
you could ideally set the timing to be best at max power output rpm and
limit above that for racing.  Probably wouldn't be practical on the street,
though.
