John,

Yes, that cable was too long and pressed against the drive mechanism.  A
definite no-no.
What you describe is the result.

Two recommendations.

1) Never buy ANYTHING from VB.

2) Sent your speedo to Momo or Nissonger, as mentioned frequently on this list.
