Chris,
Finding an un-disassembled axle/hub might not solve your dilema. If you are
looking for a hub that has not been pulled from the axle it is going to come
with the bearing, brake backer plate, and the outer seal and housing. It is
necessary to pull the hub to remove/replace these items. Depending on the
effort it took to remove the whole assembly from the rearend it might well
have thrashed the bearing getting it out.
I'm sure you will hear many ways to remove the hub. I have a 20 ton press
that was usless. I could find no way to support the hub and get over/around
the backing plate. I tried a brake drum and shattered it in short order.
Finally what I did was bolt the hub to a spare steel wheel (make sure it is
expendable, it might get bent). The I suspended the wheel between to closely
place sawhorses. I backed the nut out to the end of the axle (the nut should
be reverse, I didn't and had problems). Then with a lot of penetrating oil,
propane heat, a 10 pound - long handled - sledge hammer and about 15 to 20
full force overhead swings it finally broke loose. I put a steel plate over
the nut to somewhat protect it, but I still hurt the beginning of the axle
threads. Even after filing the thread, and using a new nut the axle somewhat
retapped the nut. Ironically there was not even any rust on the hub or axle.
Put anti-seize on the hub mating surfaces when reinstalling. I see some
merit in using silicone sealer at the back end and on the nut and washer to
keep water out. Sorry to be the bearer of possible bad news, but BTDT and it
was a nerve racking, tense, exausting time. Nonetheless I hope it all works
out for you. Perhaps your situation will go better than mine. Tom Witt
