Steve,
  I always found metal particles stuck to the magnetic plugs.   Over 4 or 5 
years I'd get the feeling that the engines must be melting down, but they 
always continued to run forever.  Of course, these were always big 6's or 
v8's.  I wonder if today's modern cars would also shed these particles?
