I had the fortune to meet and get to know one Joel Onstad. He had many
dealings with Doane in the '60's. He owns a foreign car wrecking yard in
Fresno and I was in Tiger when I went searching for parts for my sons 450 SL
(that's another long story within itself
One of the most interesting stories he told me was of a friend with a
competition Tiger that raced at the Captain Weber Day's Race, an open street
fender to fender race that took place in my home town of Stockton. He told me
that the race was being lead by a Cobra and his friend stayed close enough to
harass him but did not use up the Tiger brakes and tires. On one of the last
turns his friend closed the gap, dove under the Cobra, out braked him and
made a clean pass to win the day. Of course, I tend to be skeptical of these
stories, so he showed me a picture he had taken of the pass (picture of the
Tiger coming out of the turn). When I got home, I was glancing through the
Taylor book (Tiger, The Making Of A Sports Car) and saw on pg. 160 a similar
picture with the Tiger entering the turn. Took the book back to Joel and he
confirmed that this was indeed his friend and regaled me for several more
hours of stories about Tigers, Austin Healy's and M.G.'s and his racing
experiences. Another picture of his friend, Jim Adams, can be seen at the top
of page 160.
