A couple of tell-tales for the lower hose, supporting Dave's advice.

1) Squeeze the lower hose with your hand. It should not be squishy.

2) Although there are a lot of hoses that will fit the sizes and shape 
needed, often they are not specifically "lower suction hoses".  The 
difference being an internal wire spring (hopefully stainless) that 
prevents it from collapsing as the water pump sucks up the radiator 
outlet - sometimes faster than it want's to flow.  This can collapse a 
new hose, much less a soft old one.
