Paul:

You and I must be on the same wavelength; I just finished freshening my
trunk a couple of weeks ago and went through all the stuff you are going
through now. Let me tell you what I found out.

According to pics and text in TBON on pages 154 & 155, as well as listening
to advice from the Tiger community, the jack and jack handle should both be
black. TBON fails to say what type of black, but I agreed with most folks
on this list and painted mine a low gloss black. I also cleaned up the
spare wheel hold-down bolt and ring and repainted it the same low gloss
black.

The spare wheel was a bit of a different story. As per some of your
responses, the back of the wheels is to be painted black (I used the same
low gloss type) but the front is to be sprayed a "gray-white" color, as per
instruction in TBON on page 155 (this instruction is for Mk1s and Mk1As
only...MkIIs had silver wheels, front and back). After doing the research,
it was discovered that the "gray-white" color on the front side of the
wheels was Rootes color code #8, "Foam Gray." This paint is readily
available from Tower Paint in Oshkosh, WI, ph #920-235-6520 or 800-779-6520.
You can also look them up on the net at <http://www.towerpaint.com> if you
are so inclined. I called them equipped with only the Rootes color code #8
and the name "Foam Gray" and with that, they were able to mix it for me from
factory specs and put it in spray cans. They sell them for $14.95 per can
(a bit high but well worth it) plus shipping. I sprayed my spare wheel with
that and it turned out looking absolutely perfect. You don't to send in a
chip of the color; they have all the old factory specs for almost every
color ever used by an automobile manufacturer.

Oh, and by the way, as per instructions I received from knowledgeable folks
on this list, when you paint your wheel, paint the back black first. Then
paint the front of the wheel in the Foam Gray, but DO NOT mask off the backs
of the openings in the wheel. Just allow the Foam Gray overspray to come
through the openings in the wheel, just as the factory did. It took a lot
of intestinal fortitude for me to do that, as I like to make things look
neat. However, that is supposedly the way the factory did it and it does
make sense; they most assuredly would not have taken the time to mask off
each wheel when spraying the Foam Gray on the front.

One other element that you did not mention that I did replace was my wooden
battery spacer. Years of battery fumes and paint jobs had taken it's toll
on that piece. It was unrestorable and once again, after speaking to people
on this list, it was determined that the piece was made of a hard wood and
should be stained in dark cherry. I chose a nice piece of red oak and put
several coats of deep cherry stain on it, followed by a coat of
poly-urethane to help protect it. It should last longer than the car will!!

Good luck and please don't hesitate to contact me if you need any further
tips. I'll help you as much as I am able.

Take care,
Andy Walker
