I'll take a guess too.  I'll bet the factory engineers knew a little more about 
the lubrication requirements of the parts they were designing and even worked 
with engineers from the lubricant companies, Shell in this case, to make sure 
the product they turned out would last as long as the warranty at a minimum. 
For steering components they may have even had a higher standard because 
failure could have severe consequences. 
 
I'm not one of these Luddites that uses non-detergent oil because that is what 
it said in a 40 year old manual, but grease instead of gear lube? NO WAY.  
Would you fill your rear end with grease?
