Dick and rest of 6pack - thanks for your help, did a couple of things this
weekend, checked the clearance in the valves and found No. 1 to be at .016
vs .010, also the spark plugs were all gapped at .035 vs .025.  (don't
recall why the plugs were  adjusted larger in the first place)
Compression in No. 1 was highest at 145, No's. 2, 3, 4, were at 120+ and No.
6 was 130.  Car has never had a backfiring problem
or missing only the No. 1 plug being black (and) assume the correct gaps on
the valves and plugs should be the fix.  Car is running great and
has better pickup since the fine tuning above.

Several of you mentioned changing out your plug wires and the black plug
conition also going away; I'm sure mine are 24 years old - any
recommendations as to a good 'after market' replacement set that matches the
OE?
