Hi dan,

i am very familar w/ these! replaced splines and u-joints on my 76 tr6.
okay,
first, sometimes the flange will 'stick' to the diff. flange and as
long as the bolts are off you can just hit w/ a rubber mallet or pry
apart w/ care. i mention this in case the "i can not get it to budge"
means it is stuck.

second, you are correct: the shaft WILL NOT come out with the rubber boots
positioned as they are .. the one which protects the u-joint. instead of
taking off the rubber grease/ dirt sleeves...here is a great method....
take the boot and turn it inside out! yes, inside out so that it is now
facing outside toward the wheel well. you will be able to
slide the shaft out and then you will need to carefully and slowing reach in
and feed the boot through the wheel trailing are hole.
sometimes i would use needle nose pliers to reach in and gently pull the
edge of the boot and either rotate the shaft or move around the circle to
pull through. before you know it! the shaft will come out!!!!

REAL EASY if you take your time. this was taught to me by a wonderful
mechanice at Motorhead LTD. in Fairfax VA. i can not take credit! ;-)

let me know if you need more detail!
