I think I must agree with Jonmac and those who advocate spending
the money to get the correct parts. I have gone the home made repair
route on many things, usually with dismal results. I suppose the
advantage of home made stuff is that it convinces one that spending the
money to do it right is money well spent.
If it is $40 in shipping, that is cheap when compared to hours
of frustration and erratic results. It sounds as though you have a
pretty good idea of what you need, so order the needles from Burlen or
from Joe and get the job done. Order three slightly different sets if
you are not sure. I must also say that if it is necessary to modify the
carbs from the 2500 to keep them from leaking, etc it seems difficult to
believe that it will be a reliable setup.
You didn't say why you were going to all this trouble.
Presumably because you feel you will get better results with SUs than
Zeniths? After all the fiddling and tweaking, it is difficult to believe
that this represents a more sane approach to the issue than tuning up
your Zeniths. Of course, if you are doing it for the "Gee-whiz" factor,
then any amount of money is justified. =;-)
