I live in northern Illinois (30" of snow this December), and I never start my
car in the winter and I have never had any problems. A few years ago someone
told me that when I run my engine for the last time of the year that I should
spray WD40 into the carburetor until it stalls (it actually never did for me)
then stop the engine. The WD40 would protect the cylinders from rust. For
those who like to use the right tool for the job, there is an oil called a
Fogging Oil. Available at the local hardware stores. People with boats use
this for the same reason. It should work on our cars.
