Yes they are 1 watt FM radios. Motorola Spirit GT's. I paid $129.00 each for
them at Best Buy in Kansas City. I found them on the web but they were much
more expensive. I took one out today for another test. I left one with my
wife and took
off down the interstate. I was in my truck and she was in the living room at
home.
We finally lost each other at 6.7 miles by road. I think in a straight line
it was every bit of four miles maybe more. When I bought them I was figuring
on getting maybe half of the distance Motorola claimed the radio would
transmit. I very pleased with the perfomance of these radios.

Dimensions
height, about 6 inches including antenna(Its not detachable)
width 2.5 inches
thickness 1 inch
weight 8 oz(I'm guessing, its not much though)

Battery is NiMH. Each radio comes with a charger
2 channels with 8 freq's each
Voice activated transmission when using a headset(Vox) with adjustable
sensitivity
Comes with a belt holster
battery meter and audible beep every ten minutes in standby mode
four call alert tones
channel lock feature
Radio color is black(I like this, I didn't want a lime green or pink radio)

These units are more expensive than the FRS radios but they work great. I
can't wait to try them skiing. That will be the real test.

That's probably less than a mile, and quite flat. Of course, maybe
standing near the high banks deflected the signal skyward. . . ;^)

What kind of batteries are used in these radios? How big are they?
And, of course, everybody probably wants to know how much they cost.
