Eric Salem and some other folk write about stolen timers:

"How much of a black market can there be for this stuff?"

Interesting question, Eric, one I've pondered before... Dixie Region's
equipment trailer was stolen in its entirety a couple years ago. None of
our stuff ever showed up in various pawn shops that I visited.

Obviously, I could have missed our stuff in some other pawn shop, but my
favorite theory is that things like timers get swiped because the bad guys
think "it's a computer!" When they find out it isn't, most likely the
hardware gets tossed. I've also wondered if the "electronic eye"
start/finish units suffer a similar fate, namely "It's a video camera!"

In other words, I doubt much of a black market for timers exists, and our
clubs' hard earned equipment just gets trashed somewhere by some
crack-head. I think in our case, the thief wanted (and got!) the trailer
itself, and more'n likely tossed the stuff inside it. Stinks, don't it?
(Where is Harry Callahan with his .44 when we need him? Hell, I'd settle
for Knuckledragger with a hang-over and a .22 at a time like that.)

Another writer, Mr. Baugh, posted a note about taking timers and such home,
so that they were safer (and dry-er!). There was some issue about the
insurance company wanting proof that it was "yours" before they'd cover it.
A way around that might be for the club to "lease" (in writing) the
equipment to a certain person, and have that person take the timer home
after events. Insurance should cover theft/loss then. (Although I'm
pretty well convinced that the two things they teach in Insurance School
are "We don't cover that" and "There will be a slight rate increase.") But
I digress... Perhaps the "Lease" arrangement would help your situation.
Worth a chat with your insurer?
