While Jim may be correct with the Rover variation of the aluminum V8, the 1961
Buick service manual
says, "No gaskets are used in the entire exhaust system."

The 1961 Oldsmobile service manual indicates when installing the exhaust
manifolds that the machined
surfaces on the head and manifold should be cleaned using extreme care not to
gouge or scratch
machined surfaces. Then graphite grease should be applied before installation,
torque nuts to 18-24
ft lbs.
