James,

Yeah, I know it's not that simple. Gotta have more like 7 or 8
connections into the harness. Really, that's all you need and several of
those are just to feed the guages.

I've installed an M3 motor into a 70s 2002 using the factory computer
without problems. And, I'm hoping to advantage some of the stuff I
learned doing that swap.

But, my reason for choosing the SR is the simplicity. I think the factory
did plenty well enough tuning the motor and I'm sure it isn't hard to
reprogram the thing if I change my perspective.

Yeah, I built a custom CR tranny for that M2002, but it was a race car
(AutoX). The roadster is a street cruiser with emphasis on reliability and
comfort. Add cost to round out my list of design priorities. The car was
wicked fast with the U20, and I get to pick up a little power in the mix. I
will be smiling.

But, using the factory computer is miles easier and less expensive than
using an aftermarket controller. I don't have to spend days or weeks
programming fuel maps, etc. And, I really don't sacrafice much power.
Seriously, to effectively top factory tuning requires days of dyno/gas
analyzer time I couldn't even start to afford, and the improvements would
be marginal. If I get bored, a SR20DET swap will be less than $3k
away, and I bet I could recover much of the SR20DE investment to help
with expenses.

And, regarding the speed limiter - what do you suspect happens if there
is no speed signal? I'm guessing there is no limiter. Since speed is not
a fuel map input either no signal or constant signal will trick the
computer so that it doesn't worry about speed. All I believe I need is a
$20 part to drive the speedo cable.

But we shall see, and I promise to share my results with the list. My
motor SR20DE/5sp gets here Saturday. And, surprise, surprise I'm
also pulling the U20/5sp on Saturday. I'm being pretty aggressive, but
I'm betting that by this time next month ... I won't be wheeling a gas
guzzling F150 <hopefully>.

You might guess that I'm a wee bit excited - you would be correct. This
has been burning me since the U20 quit in october, so it feels good to
finally make some progress.

Milton
