I don't know if the problem would be as pronounced as you describe it, but I 
had the vacuum advance go out on me once, and it lost power under load, the 
rubber diaphragm insiade the adavance is probably umpteen years old, and may 
have cracked allowing leaks and so no longer doing its job--Just a guess,
