Michael,

Good question!  When I get home, I'll get out my various thread gauges and
check (I'm currently working and on a Europe trip but will return late
Tuesday).  I suspect that it might be a Whitworth thread, possibly British
Standard Pipe (BSP) a.k.a. as BSPP (Parallel) versus BSPT (Tapered).
