It's always been my impression that folks go to the 5-speed MGB conversion
for the "overdrive" fifth gear ratio more than anything else.  By the way,
the 5-speed gearbox conversion for the MG TD series makes much more sense in
that you replace the original "stump puller" first gear with a much more
useable ratio and effectively gain a new final drive ratio without having to
replace the rear axle gears, ala Carl Cederstand.  I helped a club member do
this and noted that only a small notch had to be made in the wooden
floorboard to accomodate the new equipment.  In other words, it is very easy
to return to an original configuration.
