Grant,

I put an 18 inch rigid 6 blade Flex-a-lite fan on my '51 with a '54 235 in 
it.  Fan space is at a premium in that configuration and a 1000 series fan 
will work.

Question -  How did you get an original fan to fit?  My PO had beaten the 
original almost flat to make it fit.
