Maybe I am missing the point of this thread, but I have never seen a
Spitfire engine that did NOT have a return pipe to the water pump. 
There were variations through the years of how many fittings were
attached to the rear end of the pipe and in whether or not there was a
water fitting in the head itself, but in all cases, there was a steel
pipe that runs under the manifolds to return water to the water pump.
