I believe these symptoms are caused by the U-Joint.
You should be able to jack the wheel off the ground and then take hold of the
wheel and shake side to side, up and down to verify the joint movement. Might
help if someone else could watch the joint or shake while you watch. I had
this problem last summer and at first I could not see the play either but
when my son shook the wheel ( teen age strength) and with my nose inches away
from the joint the play was very obvious. It took me a complete day to
replace the U-Joint and all the related bushings on both sides. I
needed(used) an arbor press to get the old U-joint out of the flange. (My
drill press with a minor modification worked great as a substitute arbor
press as I later learned.) The bushings and truion rebuild replacement can be
a challange and have the potential for taking more time.
