Jeff,

It's easy to tell whether it's the timing chain or the water pump,
assuming these are the only 2 possibilities. Remove the fan belt and
start the car.

If it's silent, you've got exactly 3 possible culprits, crankshaft
pulley, water pump, or dynamo (yours has a dynamo, not an alternator,
doesn't it?). All three pulleys can be wiggled by hand, but shut the
motor off before you grab the crankshaft pulley. See if one of them
wobbles.
