  I have done this on my Spitfire.  My car didn't come with the props, just
  a 4 foot wooden stick.  I have an old Civic that was going to the scrap
  yard and I took those and place it on to the Spit.  In order to get them
  to fit I had to make a plate and to make the hole on the fender a little
  bigger to mount the struts.

  The Civic struts are not really strong enought to hold up the bonnet
  and I made a bracket to keep the struts inplace.  The idea came from
  something I saw in the JC Whitney catalouge.  I never thought of taking
  picture of it but I have a picture of my engine bay where you can see one
  of the strut at the top left corner.  I have put a bicycle tire tube over
  the expose part of the strut to prevent dirt from getting into it.  Here
