Just another $.02:  
The important differences between now and when these cars were
manufactured are from 1) the current age of the metal (e.g., rust and
flex fatigue), and 2) the grip today's tires (especially R compound)
give versus that of the original hard, skinny tires.  Sports car
drivers have always stressed the suspension mounting points, but the
two differences above are what might make it dangerous.

Refresh those mounts and the places they're fastened with new
sheetmetal of the same dimension and construction, and replace the
tires with vintage replicas, and I bet you won't tear out anything
(except maybe your hair).
