When the original 77 piston threw a rod through the side (pic at
http://www.bigolbear.com/photo.htm), the only locally available fit was a
1500 engine from a 73 midget. The shop said it would fit and it did, I just
swapped the head so it would have the valve seats to handle the unleaded
gas. Other than having to change out the old single channel pulley so the
smog pump belt had a place to run, its been fine. All the brackets,
manifolds, mounts, etc lined up fine. Saw a thread (here I think)a few weeks
ago where an ex engineer was saying the leaded seats would be ok with
unleaded after they'd been run with leaded gas since enough lead remained to
cool and lubricate. So maybe I didn't even need to change the head...

What are the differences between the 1976 (and earlier) 1500 engines and the
1977 (and later) models. My understanding is that the later motors had
dished pistons and a lower compression ration, but almost everything else
was the same as the earlier engines. I am assuming there will be some
differences in anti-pollution fittings, etc. on the outside of the engine.
What I'm talking about are the internal differences. Are cams different?
Cranks? Bearings?

Another guy and I are in the same boat. We have spare 1976 engines to put
in our later model Spits. We just want to know if we are going to be able
to drop them right in.

Thanks in advance!
