How sure are you that the timing and carbs are all set up right?  I've found
that no amount of amateur fiddling myself can get Daffy to run half as well
as taking her to someone who knows what they are doing.  Yes, it can cost
the wrong side of GBP100, but that's cheaper than new carbs, and has always
worked for me.  You have no guarantee that new carbs will fix the problem,
if they are not set up right.  Look through Yellow Pages and call several
Engine Tuning shops - only 1 in 4 or so will actually sound like they know
what they are doing with SUs.  You want someone old!

One other thought - is the set-up all stock?  Any modifications such as K&N
air filters, head mods, exhaust system mods etc. can require different
needles in the carbs for the engine to run right.
