A tip:  If you feel that you have to press your pedal too hard, consider 
changing you brake pads to
a softer type, with a higher coefficient of friction.  For a long time, I had 
semi-metallic pads.
When I replaced them with the older-style black non-metallic ones, braking 
became
quite a bit easier.
