I tried this too, but couldn't get it to work.  What I would ultimately
like to do is cut down the metal cover and weld the flange back on, so
that it looks like original, just lower.  This would allow the use of the
original Sprite rubber grommet.
I now just use the shift boot and metal hold down ring from a later Midget
1500.
