use a stethoscope or even a long screwdriver to the ear and to the
generator/alternator to determine if it's the source.
I, too, have that sound at above 3000rpm since I put my motor back in. It
was suggested by George Merriweather that it may be a worn pilot bushing in
the flywheel!

I don't know if you have a generator or alternator but bad bearings in a
generator can sound like the engine is coming apart and it can come and go
with engine speed changes. Never had an alternator bearing go out so I don't
know what that sounds like but it is probably the same.
