Tom,
Don't let this mechanic "put you down"
Just because you don't know so much a about cars dosn't entitle him to give
you second rate service.
If he is in business his first job is to establish a good working
relationship of trust and respect between himself and his customers. Seems
that, however good a spanner man he may be, he has failed in this first
stage with you.
Find another mechanic.
As to your problems, take time to learn some basics, one step at a time.
If you've worked out where to put the gas (and no, I am not being facetious
here) then you can equally well deal with checking oil, water, tire
pressures, brake and clutch fluid. Before you know where you are you will
be greasing front suspension, replacing brake pads, adjusting valves,
replacing axle shafts, removing engines and all the other joys of ownership!
Suggest that you get a good shop manual, like the Hayes one. Then ignore the
bits that you don't need (just yet) but work through the first chapter about
regular servicing. Just get to know the little car!
Have confidence in yourself and treat the car as a friend !
Oh - and ask the List. It is the most valuable resource that you have
access to.

Guy
PS, yes the white plastic container is part of the cooliing system.
Don't remove the cap when it is hot.
When cold it should be 3/4 full of water.
