My bit, just to muddy the waters:

1968 to 71 Heralds and Vitesses had a colour option called 'Slate 
Grey' which is quite dark and looks beautiful, especially with a red 
interior (entirely my opinion).  The other trim option was blue.  I don't 
know if 2000's were painted in this colour, but it certainly fits the 
period.  I also don't know the code because I have a rotten memory - 
can anyone else help?

There was an earlier grey called 'Dolphin Grey' which was very much 
lighter.
