I've replaced a 4 speed in my Spit 1500 with a 5 speed and then went back
to the 4 speed. The noise difference is negiligible. You're not going to
notice it. Converting from one to the other is a huge pain in the rear and
it is expensive. You need to remove the cross brace under the tranny and
replace the drive shaft (which is shorter than the 4 speed version). I
drove my 5 speed for years with a cracked overdrive switch bezel on the
gearshift knob simply because no one can supply a good one. The gearshift
knob is the thing the driver uses most next to the steering wheel and
pedals, and shifting with a broken one was a constant source of irritation,
but the parts just aren't available. So, if you're going to install an
overdrive unit, place the overdrive switch on the dash with a toggle and
use the original shifter. The expense and irritation definitly are not
worth it just to reduce engine noise.
