Grace will write late about the "1st tuneup - and our 'auto repair for
dummies' experience" BUT

I need to ask a quick question about adjustment of timing with the
distributor cap.

As I appreciate it a '74 TR6 should have timing adjusted to (forgive me I
don't have the book in front of me) 4 degrees ATDC. Ours was way past this.
(by maybe 6-8 degrees)

None of the books are very clear about how to correct this -- I am working on
the premise that the distributor needs to be rotated to bring the timing
back. This worked until I ran out of adjustment on the distributor.

MY QUESTION. The distributor has a screw that holds a clamping plate to the
block - this can be loosened and a small amount of adjustment made. However
this is not enough - can I loosen the bolt and nut that appears to tighten
the clamp around the distributor shank (?) and turn the distributor even
more. AND should this be done with or without the engine running.

Thanks for any help - and keep your eye open for GRACE'S discription of our
antics (she is the writer in our house)
