Andy,
I checked the US sales brochures for the '65 Mk2 Spit and the '69 Mk3
Spit. (Then a new Spit had a base price of US$ 2295. I'm sorry but I
don't have any info of what a hard top kit might have cost at the time
-if it had been listed.) + I also checked the '70 Mk3 Owners handbook
(US, GB and Swedish editions) and found out:
in the '65 Mk2 broschure the steel hard top is listed as an optional
extra but in the '69 Mk3 broschure it is NOT listed among the optional
extra equipment! _Lots_ of things are there (including the ski rack!)
but not the hard top...

In the '70 Owners handbooks there are instructions on handling the hard
top in all of them. The pictures are all the same, the text is nearly
the same in the US and GB editions stating it as an Optional item. The
Swedish edition does not say anything about it being an optional
equipment since it was standard fitment...

The difference between the two texts are:
In the US version the line about lifting it away says:
"With the aid of a second operator carefully lift off the hard top
assembly."
The GB version says:
"With the aid of a second operator lift off the hard top assembly."
(The Swedish text says the same as the British but in Swedish...)
Are You more careless in North America??? ;-)

I thought that the hard top was standard fitment in Canada also, but I
might be mistaken...
Bye for now
Odd
