Racing TR6's

In William Kimberly's book "Triumph TR6" he states on page 91:

"Good as TR6s are,  they will never beat a state of the art TR4 or the later
TR7s and TR8s...".

I can understand the reference to the TR7 and TR8,  but what is he talking
about with the TR4?  Anyone got any insight?
