You might try a propane torch and a scraper, but I've got to tell you it's
going to be a messy and ugly job. I used lacquer thinner with some success,
but eventually got so disgusted and sick of the job that I left it up to my
paint and body guy when I sent the Spitfire body shell out to be prep'ed and
painted. Even then, not all of it was removed and he just painted over some
of the glue remnants. You could also try a pneumatic grinder with some
REALLY coarse sanding discs (make sure you have a LOT of discs) but this is
still messy, dusty, noisy and not "fun". (Don't you love old cars?)
If you think about though, since the stuff will be covered by underlayer and
carpet again, does it really make any difference? The only concern you
might have is whether the new glue will adhere to the old surface. I would
suggest contact cement, as it tends to stick to damn near anything. Good
