Hi,

The only special tool that you need to put the gears back in and to set
the end-float etc. is a case spreader. Setting up the pinion / ring gear
is very important or you will break the gears. Also, a badly setup rear
end will very likely howl or otherwise make noise.

If you also want to replace the stub axle seals, the manual shows that
you need a big hydraulic press to separate the hub from the stub axle. It
turns out that you can do the job without taking the stub axle apart, but
the process requires that you destroy the bearing to do it. I'll post
details, if anyone is interested. I intend to do this to one of my diffs
in the next few weeks.

And make sure that the pinion is seated correctly and that the seal is
replaced...

Diff work is labor intensive because you need to do multiple
assembly/dissasemblies to get everything lined up right. If you go to a
shop that charges by the hour, expect to pay at least 4 hours to get the
job done right.

The problem with differentials is that the bearings must be installed
with a pre-load and the only way to do that is to have a really tight fit
between the case and bearings. So, you need to spread the case apart
enough for everything to drop in and then you need to measure and then
disassemble and re-shim etc to get the contact between the gears set up
right. It just takes time.

I suggest finding a shop that has experience doing these things.

Failing someone in San Diego that can do the job, there's always British
Frame and Engine up near LA somewhere...
