I've done it on a number of vehicles, without incident.  Only caution
I'd give has to do with the mechanical gauge.  Or actually with the
tubing.  If the tubing is the tiny white stuff you see on the cheap
K-mart mechanical gauges, your gauge response will be abysmal because it
takes so long for pressure changes to actually reach the gauge.  I'd
recommend bigger tubing, necked down at the gauge in that case, or
another gauge.
