Randall,

The timing of this message is impeccable!  I have just now returned from a test
drive in the 3.  All indications are that the detent balls were the problem.  To
recap, some may remember the original problem with my TR-3 transmission:  the
engine would stall when any forward gear was selected, and when reverse was
selected, the car would move forward in second gear.  Most of the replies 
pointed
to the detent assemblies as being the culprit.

With the help of Randall Young (actually, Randall worked while I watched and
learned), the problem was indeed found to be one missing and one jammed detent
ball in the transmission top cover.  The jammed detent ball is still in its
passage, and has resisted all efforts to dislodge it.  Randall provided me with 
a
spare top, instructions on how to reassemble things, and lent me his safety wire
tool.  Once again, the list has come through.  Thanks, Randall!

As to the shifting rod sealing rings, I decided against doubling the O-rings, 
and
found some at the local hardware store that were thicker in diameter.  They
seemed to seal well, but I don't know about the long term reaction to gear oil.
