This topic has been debated, I don't know of a definitive answer.  One
of my cars appeared to be quite original, and had a brass 'T' fitting
(very unlike modern fittings) where the vent line joined with the
battery box line, just above the hole in the tunnel.  Sorry, don't have
the car anymore, no photos available.

I would first check (with a voltmeter), that one pathetic speed may well
be full speed.  The rheostat has a switch contact at the end of it's
travel, and it's not uncommon for the resistance element to break next
to the contact.  Other than that, IMO a switch is fine.

Supposedly it's for the OD wiring.  The original OD wiring apparently
came through the grommet, then ran under the trans tunnel carpet to
under the battery box, then over the carpet to the relay mounted on the
rear of the box.
