Bill,
I thought the drain for the scuttle goes through the tunnel via a tube. I'm
not as far along as you are, but try it and let me know.
Also...have you tried cleaning the wiper contact and the windings on the
rheostat body?
Take a piece of very fine paper and buff the contact until it's bright then
wipe up any residue with alchohol.
