Thread-topic: Ignition timing problem
I am trying to start a Spitfire Mark III, and I think my problem is ignition
timing. This car had been sitting for a good while, and I had drained the
tank, put in new fuel filters, and cleaned out the carb bowls.

The car was running, but not too well, when I tried to set the ignition timing
(staticly) using the directions from the Haynes manual. Now, all I can get is
backfire through the carbs. I've check my firing order, and there doesn't seem
to be a problem with points and condenser. I am getting a spark, and fuel is
getting to the carbs. Could the crankshaft pulley be on incorrectly therefore
moving the mark from top dead center? Are the any tricks to this process that
I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Alan
