Interesting.

It was only a few months before all the problems started that I had replaced
the air filter.

Over that time I wasn't driving the car too hard and probably wouldn't have
noticed any problems.

Just for grins, have you examined your air cleaners? At my 2nd race with my
freshly restored TR4 vintage racer, the engine did not want to rev past
5000. Lifting improved acceleration. We determined that the air cleaners, a
brand new pair of foam element types, were too restrictive. After they were
removed, the engine revved happily to 6000. I now run a different brand and
style of air cleaner with no problems.

I know this is a long shot, but may be worth a look. If your air cleaners
are real dirty, your engine may be running too rich to be happy
