Another precaution that I feel is very worthwhile for expensive items is to
use an escrow service. For a small fee, they hold the payment in escrow
until you approve the item. I used TradeEnable

for a $1000 item I purchased last year, and everything went very smoothly.
The Sports 6 I bought on eBay last year was perhaps not entirely fairly
represented, but overall I am still happy with the transaction. In that
case, the seller did not get the money until the car was loaded on my tow
dolly ...
