Looks like the car went into a hillside backwards ( looks to be dirt in the
LR fender. ) Something had to get under the rear to push it up. Also looks
like the LF took some sort of tree / hedge hit.
As for installing a cell, the only true fuel is one that has a rubber bladder
inside a metal can. ( $ 600 + )
Hard plastic "fuel cells" ( plastic gas tanks ) are popular with drag racers
and entry level oval track cars. ( ~ $ 150 ) Drag cars tend not to get hit in
the rear and for entry level oval track adding a steel can and some roll cage
tubing is adequate as speeds are relatively low.
Remember, any pre 1967 car sold in the US is going to lack many safety
features such as dual circuit brake system, collapsible steering column, fuel
spillage control during a roll over, roof / windshield crush testing and so on.
