Seriously, I had a very similar experience during my 2550-mile round trip
(NY-MN-NY) to the VTR National in 2002. My Herald has the same 8+ gallon tank.
So, even at 35 mpg (at an average of 60-65 mph on the Interstates), one stops
often for gas during a 12-hour driving day.
At a gas-up during the convention's "Breakfast Run," my card was refused.
Fortunately, I had enough cash with me. Later that day, I checked my home phone
messages and found that the card company had called. I called them back, read
off all the receipts I had and explained that I was traveling...and all was ok
again. Not that I didn't appreciate their concern, but it's not as if I'd
racked up $2000-3000 or more in any single day...more like about $80-90 for gas
and lodging!
Oh, and the Herald gave me no trouble on that trip other than running very warm
in the 90 degree + trip out. Fixed that by flushing the cooling system at the
"VTR car wash area" provided by the host hotel and refilling with a fresh
water/antifreeze mix. After that, in the same temperatures, it never read more
than halfway on the gauge.
