Gregg:  Doing a frame up restoration, I replaced the bearings and 
straightened the shaft (which had been bent a long time) also new spring. 
Very straight forward task, just undo the four screw nuts at either end of 
the shaft and removed the bearing covers (which are split) remove the collar 
and slip the shaft out of the firewall.  Assembly is reversed.  Good Luck
