In at least some cases, like the message I just replied to, the original message
was not sent to the list, but a reply was.
I believe there are also times when the list server has trouble delivering mail
and things get out of sequence. I have occasionally gotten replies to my posts
before I've seen the original post. I also suspect that sometimes the list
server chokes on a particular message, delivers it to some people but not others
(pending intervention by our listmeister), but continues delivering other
messages (unless it happens too many times). Just a WAG of course, but that's
how I would write it.
